Episode 34: Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat is my all time favorite video game series. It's also (in my opinion) the best video game movie. I know that bar is low but I love the Mortal Kombat movie so much. The characters, the music, the action, it's something that brings me back to my childhood. However before the movie hit the big screen, as there usually is, there were multiple drafts of the screenplay. Today is a look at the very first draft to what would eventually become the Hollywood blockbuster.

Episode 33.5: Justice League Review Mini

It's been a few weeks since there's been a mini episode. Today I actually have something to discuss! Not only will we talk about what script will be featured in our next episode, today also features of review of Warner Bros latest DCEU film Justice League. It's what they've all been building up to (?) and we finally get to see the Justice League together on the big screen. The question is, is the movie worth your time or money? Well luckily I saw the movie and I can give you my opinions and you can decide for yourself. I also want to hear your thoughts an opinions if you've seen the movie!

Episode 33: Justice League Mortal

Comic book movies pretty much dominate the industry now. The Marvel cinematic universe launched in 2008 and we also saw what most consider the ultimate Batman movie, The Dark Knight. It's crazy to think that things might have gone another way. In 2008 we also saw a Justice League movie enter production directed by George Miller of Mad Max fame. Unfortunately the film ran into a series of hold ups until it was eventually cancelled. This week we take a look at the Justice League movie that almost happened.

Written By: Kieran Mulroney and Michele Mulroney

Logline: An evil force secretly pits the worlds super heroes against each other, causing them to team up and form the ultimate force of justice.

Shocktober 2017: Episode 19 - Hellraiser

I think all horror fans know Hellraiser. If you don't know the story, you at least know Pinhead, the leader of the Cenobites. This was a movie I had seen clips of, had seen parts of the sequels, but had never watched the whole thing. I haven't really touched any 80s horror films so I figured why not jump headfirst into an 80s classic and fill in one of my horror knowledge gaps. "An unfaithful wife encounters the zombie of her dead lover; demons are pursuing him after he escaped their sadomasochistic underworld."

Shocktober 2017: Episode 18 - The Bad Batch

This is a movie I struggled with deciding to include or not, but multiple movie sites have it categorized as horror so I'm calling it fair game. The Bad Batch is available on Netflix, and a couple movie review shows I listen to talked about liking it so I figured I would check it out. "A love story set in a community of cannibals in a future dystopia. In a desert wasteland in Texas, a muscled cannibal breaks one important rule: don't play with your food."

Shocktober 2017: Episode 17 - The Rezort

Well it's the second zombie movie of this year's Shocktober. What would happen if you combined Jurassic Park with Night of the Living Dead? Unfortunately there are no dinosaurs but there are plenty of zombies in this Netflix pick. "The ReZort, a safari park, offers paying guests the opportunity to kill as many zombies as they please following an outbreak."

Shocktober 2017: Episode 16 - The Void

Now the 80s is where Horror thrived when it came to amazing practical effects. Especially creature effects with movies like The Thing and Gremlins. What would it be like if you made one of those movies today? Well The Void answers that question. "Shortly after delivering a patient to an understaffed hospital, a police officer experiences strange and violent occurrences seemingly linked to a group of mysterious hooded figures."

Shocktober 2017: Episode 15 - Here Alone

Well it's impossible to do a horror movie every day in October and not watch a Zombie film. This is the first one in this year's Shocktober, and it was one that really caught my attention with the trailer. It popped up on Netflix and it was time for me to see if it lived up to it's trailer. "A young woman struggles to survive on her own in the wake of a mysterious epidemic that has killed much of society, and forced her deep into the unforgiving wilderness."

Shocktober 2017: Episode 14 - Cult of Chucky

Well the last episode we talked about Curse of Chucky. It's only right to follow that up with the newly released sequel Cult of Chucky. This may be one of the more exciting one-two punch movie surprises I've ever experienced. "Chucky returns to terrorize his human victim, Nica. Shocktober 2017: Episode 13 - Curse of Chucky

A horror franchise six films deep doesn't deserve to be this good. This film really feels like the reinvention of a franchise, and one that seemed impossible to bounce back from after the last entry. "After her mother's mysterious death, Nica begins to suspect that the talking, red-haired doll her visiting niece has been playing with may be the key to recent bloodshed and chaos."

The Strangers is a movie I remember coming out when horror films were kind of in a slump and getting a lot of praise. Not for lack of trying I just never got around to seeing it. This was the year to finally rectify that, which has been a theme for this year's Shocktober. "A young couple staying in an isolated vacation home are terrorized by three unknown assailants."

Well the Conjuring is one of the most talked about big budget horror films in recent years. The movie was wildly successful and has created it's own line of sequels and spin offs. It was one I hadn't gotten around to seeing but I finally corrected that. "Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse."

This movie made quite a buzz at film festivals and the initial trailer definitely caught my interest. The title and trailers may be misleading, and it's got some hype behind it, the question is does it live up to all of that? "Secure within a desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world, a man has established a tenuous domestic order with his wife and son. Sometimes when you dive into the bowels of Netflix you can discover some truly interesting films. This was recommended to me by a coworker and I have to admit, I was skeptical, but I gave it a shot and I'm glad I did. "A fun weekend turns into madness and horror for a bunch of groupies looking for fun in a beaver infested swamp." Shocktober 2017: Episode 4 - Sleepy Hollow

While Tim Burton is a director with a legacy, and one that is generally well regarded, I've always been underwhelmed by his work. With the exception of one film. His interpretation of the classic tale of Sleepy Hollow. "Ichabod Crane is sent to Sleepy Hollow to investigate the decapitations of 3 people with the culprit being the legendary apparition, the Headless Horseman." Personally if Tim Burton built a career on period horror films I think he would have been my favorite director because, to me, this is one of the all time underrated films.

Shocktober 2017: Episode 1 - Stephen King's IT

Well it's my favorite time of year! The month where we can watch horror movies unabashedly from when the sun comes until it goes down. To celebrate the upcoming holiday Halloween, my favorite, I always prepare by trying to watch a horror movie every day in October. I call it Shocktober, and yeah so do a lot of other people but it's a great name so back off! Every day in October there will be a bonus episode of the podcast that will feature a review of a different horror film.

Today's movie is the 1990 version of Stephen King's IT. "In 1960, seven pre-teen outcasts fight an evil demon who poses as a child-killing clown. Thirty years later, they reunite to stop the demon once and for all when it returns to their hometown."

There is a unique twists to today's commentary track. Ghostbusters is something that shaped my childhood. Today's episode is another commentary track! This film will be covered again with a guest but this time Jeremy preferred to do it solo to establish his views on the DCEU's origin and to touch base with this film in particular. Before Batman fought Superman, before Wonder Woman, there was the solo Superman film that was highly polarizing. Now that future films have been released, how does the first one hold up?

Bonus Episode: Alien Engineers Redux

Well today's episode is actually a bonus episode, recorded a few weeks ago as a back up in case the Alien Engineers guest was going to be late. Things are getting busy on this end so there will be some different kinds of episodes in the future, on top of the script episodes. There is a big script episode planned very soon but in the meantime enjoy these different and, hopefully, interesting looks at some movies. Just like the last episode about Alien Engineers, this was recorded before the release of Alien Covenant so there are some predictions for that movie featured.

Written By: Jon Spaihts

Logline: set in the late 21st century and centers on the crew of the spaceship Prometheus as it follows a star map discovered among the artifacts of several ancient Earth cultures. Seeking the origins of humanity, the crew arrives on a distant world and discovers a threat that could cause the extinction of the human species.

Episode 21: Batman/Superman Asylum

This week one of the hosts of the Nerds and Marks podcast, Jordan Pryde, joins in to talk about the Batman vs Superman movie that almost was. The only public evidence of this movie was a billboard in the background of I Am Legend, this script simply titled "Asylum" was written by Shelved all star Andrew Kevin Walker. Deemed too dark, this script was eventually Shelved which lead us to Batman Begins, but is this script really that awful?

Written By: Andrew Kevin Walker

Logline: When an unknown villain's plot tries to pit the two top heroes of the world against each other, Batman is forced out of retirement and sent on a rampage of vengeance, leaving Superman with no choice but to stop his friend from breaking his vows.

Episode 18: Alien Engineers

The second of two scripts that inspired the podcast and comes just in time for Alien Covenant. Alien Engineers was the original script that eventually became Prometheus. Released in 2012, Prometheus was originally envisioned as the Alien prequel that had been rumored forever but during production the script was reworked to be a more original sci-fi film about the creation of humanity that just existed in the same cinematic universe. Now the original script still featured all of that, but also a lot more Aliens.

Episode 17: Superman Lives (Kevin Smith Draft)

Well over the next few weeks we are going to covering a couple scripts that were the inspiration of this podcast. They have been mentioned time and time again but haven't been discussed and it's time to rectify that. This first week is a little script written by Kevin Smith called Superman Lives. Maybe one of the most famous un-produced scripts, there's even a documentary about the movies failed production. Now there have been many Superman movies that have already been released, but where does this one fall?

Written by: Kevin Smith

Logline: When Lex Luthor teams up with the cosmic entity Braniac, Superman faces his biggest struggle yet, one that will push him past his limits or see him die trying.

Episode 16: Alien vs Predator The Hunt

This is one of the most anticipated scripts of the show. We wanted to cover this one from the beginning and just had to wait for the right time. With Alien Covenant on the horizon now seemed like the perfect time. Don't worry, we didn't jump the gun on this one because we have another Alien script to cover when Covenant comes out. For now we sit back and look at an AVP script from 1991, inspired by the original 1989 comic book.
