Shocktober 2017: Episode 19 - Hellraiser

I think all horror fans know Hellraiser. If you don't know the story, you at least know Pinhead, the leader of the Cenobites. This was a movie I had seen clips of, had seen parts of the sequels, but had never watched the whole thing. I haven't really touched any 80s horror films so I figured why not jump headfirst into an 80s classic and fill in one of my horror knowledge gaps. "An unfaithful wife encounters the zombie of her dead lover; demons are pursuing him after he escaped their sadomasochistic underworld."

This is a movie I struggled with deciding to include or not, but multiple movie sites have it categorized as horror so I'm calling it fair game. The Bad Batch is available on Netflix, and a couple movie review shows I listen to talked about liking it so I figured I would check it out. "A love story set in a community of cannibals in a future dystopia. In a desert wasteland in Texas, a muscled cannibal breaks one important rule: don't play with your food."

Well it's the second zombie movie of this year's Shocktober. What would happen if you combined Jurassic Park with Night of the Living Dead? Unfortunately there are no dinosaurs but there are plenty of zombies in this Netflix pick. "The ReZort, a safari park, offers paying guests the opportunity to kill as many zombies as they please following an outbreak."

Now the 80s is where Horror thrived when it came to amazing practical effects. Especially creature effects with movies like The Thing and Gremlins. What would it be like if you made one of those movies today? Well The Void answers that question. "Shortly after delivering a patient to an understaffed hospital, a police officer experiences strange and violent occurrences seemingly linked to a group of mysterious hooded figures."

Shocktober 2017: Episode 15 - Here Alone

Well it's impossible to do a horror movie every day in October and not watch a Zombie film. This is the first one in this year's Shocktober, and it was one that really caught my attention with the trailer. It popped up on Netflix and it was time for me to see if it lived up to it's trailer. "A young woman struggles to survive on her own in the wake of a mysterious epidemic that has killed much of society, and forced her deep into the unforgiving wilderness."

Well the last episode we talked about Curse of Chucky. It's only right to follow that up with the newly released sequel Cult of Chucky. This may be one of the more exciting one-two punch movie surprises I've ever experienced. "Chucky returns to terrorize his human victim, Nica. Meanwhile, the killer doll has some scores to settle with his old enemies, with the help of his former wife."

A horror franchise six films deep doesn't deserve to be this good. This film really feels like the reinvention of a franchise, and one that seemed impossible to bounce back from after the last entry. "After her mother's mysterious death, Nica begins to suspect that the talking, red-haired doll her visiting niece has been playing with may be the key to recent bloodshed and chaos."

Well the Conjuring is one of the most talked about big budget horror films in recent years. The movie was wildly successful and has created it's own line of sequels and spin offs. This movie made quite a buzz at film festivals and the initial trailer definitely caught my interest. The title and trailers may be misleading, and it's got some hype behind it, the question is does it live up to all of that? "Secure within a desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world, a man has established a tenuous domestic order with his wife and son. Then a desperate young family arrives seeking refuge."

I have to say, I didn't know what to expect from this movie, but I knew it wouldn't be what I wanted. Despite reviews, I felt compelled to watch this movie and judge it for myself. Sometimes when you dive into the bowels of Netflix you can discover some truly interesting films. This was recommended to me by a coworker and I have to admit, I was skeptical, but I gave it a shot and I'm glad I did. "A fun weekend turns into madness and horror for a bunch of groupies looking for fun in a beaver infested swamp." This movie is basically Night of the Living Dead with beavers and an interesting horror comedy worth your time.

Shocktober 2017: Episode 4 - Sleepy Hollow

While Tim Burton is a director with a legacy, and one that is generally well regarded, I've always been underwhelmed by his work. With the exception of one film. His interpretation of the classic tale of Sleepy Hollow. "Ichabod Crane is sent to Sleepy Hollow to investigate the decapitations of 3 people with the culprit being the legendary apparition, the Headless Horseman." Personally if Tim Burton built a career on period horror films I think he would have been my favorite director because, to me, this is one of the all time underrated films.
