Episode 50: Screenplay 101

Well the podcast has managed to make it to 50 episodes so today I thought we would do something a little different. This may be a boring episode to some but I have had multiple people reach out to me asking about how they write a screenplay. Some just wanting to know how to get started. Well a big part of my research for my own writing involves breaking down movies I watch into a script format so I thought it would be fun to do the same on the podcast. Now I am by no means an arbiter of what it takes to be a screenwriter. I have no experience in selling a script or making a movie, I just hope that one day I will. This is just my personal advice and take on the best way to get a beginner started. Hopefully anything I say here can inspire the next person to finally take to that keyboard and write a script of their own.

Episode 49: Daredevil Season 3 Review

Well this week was supposed to be Freddy vs Jason but that episode might be moved to Halloween or the first November episode due to some scheduling conflicts and personal news (that I can't talk about yet.) So instead of missing a week I decided to get some reviews up on some shows that I just finished watching this weekend. First off is two Marvel Netflix season in Daredevil Season 3 and Jessica Jones Season 2. I also throw in Supergirl Season 1 as I just finished that on my way to marathon all of the DC TV shows to get to the Batwoman cross over.

Shocktober 2018: Episode 7 - Little Evil

Little Evil is a Netflix film that quickly caught my attention because of the cast. It features a lot of actors that I think are very funny or am a big fan of. I decided to throw it on for Shocktober and see if the movie lived up to the caliber.

"Gary, who has just married Samantha, the woman of his dreams, discovers that her six-year-old son may be the Antichrist."

Today's episode is an interview with Elle Lamont. Elle is a actress and producer based out of Austin Texas. While Elle has credits spanning many films and shorts (Including Machete Kills and From Dusk Till Dawn The Series) she will be appearing in Alita: Battle Angel set to release on February 14th, 2019. Elle discusses how she got into the business and managed to cross over from acting into producing and how she hopes to empower other female creatives. We also talked about the difference between working in film between Texas and LA.

Shocktober 2018: Episode 6 - The VVitch

This is a movie that I have been dying to see since it's first trailer. It had always eluded me until it recently popped up on Netflix. I know a lot of people were put off by the accurate 1600's way of speaking, but does this movie live up to the hype?

"A family in 1630s New England is torn apart by the forces of witchcraft, black magic and possession."

Shocktober 2018: Episode 5 - Death Note

I am a fairly casual manga fan and while I was always interested in Death Note, I never actually got around to reading it. Since the movie dropped on Netflix I always saw it as maybe a gateway into the source material. Well after the movie I started reading the books, but what does that say about the film?

"A high school student named Light Turner discovers a mysterious notebook that has the power to kill anyone whose name is written within its pages, and launches a secret crusade to rid the world of criminals."

Shocktober 2018: Episode 4 - The Dark Tower

I swear I didn't watch this many Stephen King movies on purpose! This was actually the first film I watched of the season and it just got pushed down the line of reviews. Based on what is known as King's magnum opus, does the movie live up to the book series?

"The last Gunslinger: Roland Deschain, has been locked in an eternal battle with Walter O'Dim, also known as the Man in Black, and determined to prevent him from toppling the Dark Tower that holds the universe together. With the fate of the world at stake, good and evil will collide in the ultimate battle, as only Roland can defend the Tower from the Man in Black."

I will pretty much watch any movie starring Ryan Reynolds, so when I saw that he was doing a horror comedy I knew I wanted to check it out. Alas it was given a limited release and never crossed my path until it recently popped up on Netflix. It was finally my chance to give The Voices a shot!

Well it's that time of year again. The time where we can watch a horror movie every day and not be considered crazy. We start of this years Shocktober marathon with a Stephen King adaptation on Netflix. 1922.

"A simple yet proud farmer in the year 1922 conspires to murder his wife for financial gain, convincing his teenage son to assist. But their actions have unintended consequences."

Episode 46: Iron Man

Before there was a Marvel Cinematic Universe that launched with 2008's Iron Man, there was almost a different Iron Man there was almost a different Iron Man. It's hard to imagine a version of Iron Man without Robert Downey Jr. but it's a reality we almost could have had. This version of the story differs quite a lot from the version we know today, but would it have made a good movie? Would we have gotten an Avengers movie with a Toby Maguire Spider-Man? Probably not but it's still fun to imagine.

Written By: Alfred Gough & Miles Millar & David Hayter

Logline: The origin story of Marvel's Avenger Iron Man! When Tony Stark realizes his tech is being stolen and used to create illegal weapons he must navigate the world of conspiracy to get to the bottom of this treachery. He might also need a new weapon of his own.

REPOST: Episode 1: Batman Year One

Well it had been brought to my attention that the first episode had become unavailable. While I'm busy working on some stuff behind the scenes I thought I would take this opportunity to repost the original episode so anyone who has missed it will have a chance to give it a listen. Just a note this version of the episode has the same amature audio editing as the original post so just be warned. I've come a long way since then.

Episode 43: Gladiator 2

I remember when the movie Gladiator first came out. It was a sight to behold. There were no movies of it's kind at the time. The sheer violence alone made it stand out, and beneath all of the blood and be-headings was a story of a broken man who wanted to avenge his family. It was a perfect movie. Would you believe me if I told you that there exists a script for a sequel? Now I know what you're thinking. Maximus died at the end. Well, how does this script address that? Let's find out.

Written By: Nick Cave

Logline: After Maximus awakens in the afterlife, he sets out on a quest of the gods to destroy a rogue deity and be reunited with his family.

Episode 42: Paradise Lost/Alien Covenant

Prometheus is one of my favorite sci-fi films in the last ten years. It's a movie I love more and more with each viewing, and is just a spectacle to behold. Naturally I was excited for the follow up, Alien Covenant. Unfortunately Covenant didn't live up to my expectations. While I enjoyed the film enough, it was full of nitpick inconsistencies and just didn't feel like the true sequel I wanted. Well after the movie released I heard rumors of an earlier script and changes made to the movie. I was dying to get my hands on the script. After almost a year of searching I finally found it! So did the original script give me more of what I wanted?

Ever since the Justice League movie released it's been in the back of my mind. I found the movie an extreme disappointment and I have just been pondering the future of the DCEU ever since. Instead of sending everyone over to my dead blog, but while still wanting to share my thoughts on the film franchise, I decided to just read the blog on the show! Episode 37: Star Wars Episode VI Commentary

Well we finally did it! My wife had never seen Star Wars before last year. Previously we watched the first two original films and recorded a commentary track. It's been a long time coming but we finally sat down to watch Return of the Jedi. This episode is maybe my favorite of the three and her first time reactions were very interesting. From a non-fans perspective the things you expect may be totally surprising. So now it's time to wrap it up as we finish off the original trilogy. Just a heads up the volume of the movie may be a little loud in the beginning.

Episode 36: Robocop 2

Robocop is arguably one of the best movies ever made. Or at least it's the best movie about a cyborg cop who shoots perverts in their privates. Robocop 2 is one of my favorite sequels despite it's generally lackluster reception. The film was originally written by Frank Miller but there had to be massive re-writes before the film could make it to the screen. The original script was deemed "un-filmable". Well that script was then taken and turned into a comic book. This episode looks at that original script/comic.

We talked about it multiple times in 2017, but here is our first (and kinda short) movie pitch episode. This episode is a solo pitch where I talk about my own idea for a Marvel Black Widow movie. This pitch mostly revolves around what I would do with the plot of the movie and how it would fit into the Marvel MCU. This will probably be a pitch that gets revisited with a guest so we can do a deeper dive on specific scenes and more intimate story details. Think of this as a preview of the feature.
